Movie: Deathnote

Forgot to post about this movie that we watched yesterday.

A unique show, as it is with Japanese movies which always have quite interesting themes.

A quick synopsis. Death God drops a notebook on Earth. Boy picks it up. Whoever's name is written in the notebook dies eventually. Boy used it to do justice by killing off the bad guys. Police looking for person who's killing without being seen. Another young boy joins the hunt for the killer.

Well, at first he does use it to kill off the bad guys but in the end, he used it to kill the good guys as well. It's just like the question of playing God: Who gets to decide who should live or die? What's evil or good? In the end he turned out to be the ultimate evil because to shake off the police's trail he ended up killing the girl who loves him. What kind of perfect world is being created? By who's standards?

There's no such thing as a perfect world. Accept it. The bad will always exist among the good. I guess it's just the balance of nature afterall.

Movie: World Trade Centre

Of course it's nothing new about movies like this, the title says it all. An event that took place 5 years ago, through the story of two patrol policemen who went in as a team but ended up the building collapsed on them, leaving two of them still alive but pinned under debris. That with love, humanity pulls through, love of one person for another. You can be total strangers but it doesn't matter because everyone is a brother or a sister, regardless of race, language, religion. Somehow very touched by humanity depicted here. Simple but touching. I'm always amazed at how strong humanity can be, especially those stories about how after a few days you can still find survivors even though hope of living is so minimal. Life is indeed miraculous. The movie leaves me wanting to go out there and save someone right after the movie.

At the end of the movie, when the names of those who died in the disaster appeared, people in the cinema start leaving. I think maybe it's just here. Maybe it really doesn't strike a chord in them. I feel that the only polite thing to do is to at least let the names scroll to the end, in respect for the people who perished just because they happened to be in the building or whether they went in to save others but end up losing their lives. We will never be able to feel what they felt but the least, show respect for these people.

Movie: Singapore Dreaming

Should have known better than to go and catch a sub-standard local production. Run-in-the-mill ideas such as nasty maids vs nasty employers, 5 Cs, stiking lottery, blah blah blah. You mean there is nothing else to characterize Singapore besides these? Long ago when Jack Neo made movies like that it probably strikes down to the hearts but years down the road I think people are sick of watching recurring themes. For goodness sake, find something new to show your fellow citizens.
