Well well well, as usual(AGAIN) His Highness, for unfathomable reasons, did not tell me that the replacement minion is coming in tomorrow. I found out from the poor minion that was asked to go fetch the replacement tomorrow morning. How apt, catch me on my last day!
Anyway from a separate source, it was said that my replacement is 1) a MBA holder, 2) with working experience. Wow, I must say I'm honoured that they needed to hire such a high level person to come do my puny job. I wonder which part of the job description did His Highness tweaked. He should show me the JD so I can copy that into my resume. Let's hope the replacement minion has a stronger heart than me and will at least stay around longer. More updates on the replacement minion tomorrow when I get to meet her. :)

Haha sending someone in on the last day is definitely not a good choice as leaving minion has more important things to do such as being grilled on unfinished work, meeting pple for last lunches, meeting pple who can't get me for lunch for tea, returning office stuff etc. In the end I only got to talk to the replacement minion for 1 hr.
Definitely not a spring chicken and the 1 hour is enough to tell that she's a deep person. She doesn't offer any more information than she should. I acted ignorant and asked if this is her first job and all she said was that she came from completing her MBA. My counterpart in Philippines was assigned as her buddy because she just finished her MBA there. Immediately flashing through my mind was: Who the hell goes to Philippines to do MBA?? Plus she's a Singaporean. And earlier I had a conversation with my ex-manager who said: So what if she has a MBA? MBA has many different types and quality of work may not be all the same even if she's a MBA holder. Well then I asked is this her 2nd job all she did was said no. Well, ok, point taken that she will not say anymore.
But the best was the last question she asked me: So any tips for handling certain people in the team, you know, people like His Highness or my other manager etc. Girl, you just have to find out for yourself, I'm not risking this kind of question. And so I lied that everyone is nice, well, it is partly true.
So I left her as I've got plenty of things to throw or return on the last day. Next thing I know, 5pm she came to my desk and tell me she's leaving coz she had no laptop and nothing else to do. Wow, an experienced hire is definitely not the same. Even when I'm leaving, I dragged up to 6pm before I'm finally done with everything and here she is, first day at work and leaving even before time is up. *clap clap* I hope His Highness have fun dealing with her or maybe it's the other way round? :)

When is true liberation going to be here?
Finally the course is coming to an end soon with the last paper this coming Tuesday. Next steps will be to plan and actively search for a new internal posting. Really running out of tolerance for this new manager. I regret not taking leave on Monday *sighs* but I've run out of leave for the year. :(
Anyway why do I want to change jobs? Of course many instance but the latest one being, the reschedule of the Friday meeting to Monday when 1) I have been on leave for the last 2 days and have lots of work emails to catch up on Monday 2) Monday is already a busy meeting day for me without him adding in another hour 3) I still have paper on Tuesday and obviously I do not have time to think about work, much less think of ideas for him to go back to the director. Really fed-up with it. And that bloody email saying what good luck for exams, take chicken essence etc *puiz* just paying lip service only. What I will truly appreciate is leaving me alone to take my exams in peace and not add these extra stress on me. My colleague is right by saying he totally has no understanding for his subordinates at all, now I truly understand. Of course, how could a selfish person who has a stay home wife with three kids understand anything about stress, about juggling work, family and studying?

Late night in the office
I am blogging live from my workstation now at 7.40pm. I have to stay back today to take a call from the US at the ungodly time of 8.30pm to 10pm. My only fear is that by the time the call ends at 10pm, I'm the only one left in this level. *looks around uncomfortably*
The reminder email for today's call says that this is only the beginning of the calls. They want to hold 2 of these every quarter!!!!!! *faints*
In future, I shall make sure I invest in a bloody good corded phone so that I can take the calls at home instead of staying back so late in the office! In the meantime, back to work on more stuffs that's due tomorrow.

Goodbye Boon Lay, Hello CBP
Last Friday marks the last day I spend with the organization. It marks the very last morning I have to wake up at 6am to go for work! Woohoo~
I'm really pleasantly surprised that despite me being there for only a short time, everyone in the office still pooled some money together to get me a farewell gift. Actually it's quite a significant sum when everyone contributed $10 to it (I was told all except someone who had the cheek to give only $2!) and it got me a pretty decent gift which I otherwise will not have bought on my own.
It's only been a rather short-lived working experience there but it sure taught me a lot. I believe everyone that I meet and everywhere I go has its reasons and every experience is worth learning from. On to the next phase!

New year, new life and new job!
Finally I can declare that I am changing jobs for sure. Before the appointment letter was signed, everything was still uncertain but now it has become a fact! :)
Yup I am going back to my old workplace! Sometimes things works in strange ways and opportunity do not come knocking all the time. I'm glad this time everything has gone well. I was so afraid that I wouldn't get the job but now no need to worry anymore. :)

Burnt out

angry & tired....
That's how I felt 2 weeks ago. Too many things happening at the same time or should I say problems. I'm so looking forward to my leave tomorrow and the Shanghai trip in November.
Anyway work sucks when you have colleagues that are totally uncooperative. What's with just fishing a name out from your computer? How much time could that take? No wonder he's still single, probably he can continue to stay that way if he doesn't check himself and strive to be more gentlemanly. I really don't understand these people's mentality. Don't they understand that what goes round comes round?

Things do not change; we change.
Today the PRC students graduated from their prep course to the Uni. When I step in for work, this was one of those projects that was 'conveniently' handed to me. Luckily everyone that I worked with is doing this for the first time. As the overall in charge of the ceremony, I frankly did very little. In fact I was worrying the past few days is there something important I should be doing but not done?
The ceremony lack any guest of honour because they all backed out last minute. My dear boss didn't even inform me that she's not coming. But the show still went on. The highlight of the ceremony definitely is the skits put up by the students themselves to show off how much their English has improved! Very very very creative! To put up 8 skits in a row can be very draggy but this is definitely not. Skits include things like:
- Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai Brokeback Mountain edition
- The classic TV scene, remember a tv and people playing out inside the screen? I always love the 'advertisements'
- My personal favourite is the recital at the end. Recited and written by the students in an English standard far better than the above average Singapore student and accompanied by a video montage of the photos they took from the start when they signed the contract to come to Singapore to the various activities that took place during their course. My title came from one of the quotes they used. I'm really very much touched despite this is the third time I'm seeing it (I attended the previous two rehearsals). It is a really good ending to the ceremony.
It has been a very long time since I've seen such things put up by students. I remember when I was studying, there used to be things like English Drama Week and students will put up skits as competition during assembly. But somehow as the years went on, such things seemed to be lost. When I was teaching there was no such things at all. In fact, assemblys were rare and even if there were, it's because we use it to celebrate events or make annoucements. Today's graduation ceremony just showed that if given the right push, students can actually come up with very creative ideas, they can be imaginative if we allow them to. I'm sure that goes the same for our local students.
I would say that it went very well although it lacked the element of grandness and solemn feel that a graduation ceremony should have. To me, it is a success because these students owned the day and took pride in it. There are singing talents, dancing talents, musical instrument talents, video editing talents, photo taking talents etc just that we do not have time to showcase every single one.
Oh and I must mention this: during the ceremony there was a lapse in timing. During the empty space, the course coordinator made an appeal to the students for someone to come perform. It didn't take long and a boy stood up, came to the front, took the microphone and started singing American Pie. He may have forgotten some of the lyrics but the sporting spirit is definitely commendable. If this had been a local bunch of students, I'm sure all will just sit there waiting to see which idiot (if any at all) would volunteer himself. I see why these PRC students are the cream of the crop (albeit only the 2nd layer) and it is no wonder why. In a big country, if you don't stand out above the rest, you are nothing.

New update on job
Job has been really 'exciting' with hundreds of emails to reply to. I've never needed to answer so many emails in any job. Now my desk is not just covered by think ring files but all sorts of coloured files!
The latest happening in the job is to bring a bunch of PRC (I always thought it's not politically correct to address them in this way but hey that's how my organisation calls them) delegates to tour the campus. I never knew there is so much to planning a simple trip. First time doing it and my predecessor only did it twice before last year but not the whole day kind of program. Well I always get those first-time thingy on my job.
Today just went for a walk in the hot sun to recce the campus. Did I ever blog before about me getting lost in the campus? Anyway to prevent such things from happening again I went with my other colleague to familiarize the grounds. I really hate the campus, it's not only far but it's too huge! I still like where I came from. I'm glad most of my friends came from the same institution I graduated from :P Nice small and cosy.
Anyway I read on my friend's blog about the girl who passed away due to stress and overwork. I shall never work on a laptop for 8 hours straight. Hmmm come to think of it, I don't have a laptop! Haha anyways I shall not overwork.

New job day 3

tired....
New job day 3 and I'm feeling so dead tired. In fact, yesterday I came back so tired that I went to sleep at 11+pm. I think I have not slept so early for a very long time. Ok, fine, I'll admit it: Traveling a long distance to work kills. I've not gotten up so early to go to work for at least a year. My old body can't take this kind of early hours again. I NEED to get hold of that stupid bus uncle and force a seat on the bus out of him.
As with all jobs, first day and I get thrown into the deep end of the pool. I see my name on almost anything and everything that has a date and I don't even know what's going on. First day of work and I get information overload. A stack of SOP to read. Huge ring files start to appear on my table. Attachments of sorts appear in my Inbox. Plus my responsibility is to handle a group of undesirable so-called scholars from certain countries, 2 countries to be exact, and I'm sure everyone has heard about how undesirable these peeps are. Totally overwhelmed. And I'm traveling to KL next week. Much of the work reminds me of the old days in school, maybe that's why they claim public sector is a dead alley. Maybe my brains have really rested for too long. Time to get adjusted again. Challenge awaits.

Moving on to new chapter!
Cool, I received a phone call from my soon-to-be colleague saying that I'm required to fly to KL for work. And I'm flying off in barely less than 2 weeks from the start of my new job! Maybe the only down side is that it's over the weekends but I'm really excited! Finally a job that's not purely deskbound! Ohhh so much to look forward to! =)

Realised that past few entries were about wedding, this is not a wedding blog, so I better talk about something else, in case my readers get bored.
Looking back, it's been one year since I had a job change. Despite the ridiculous things I'm required to do sometimes, it really wasn't all that bad. I had my share of slacking at work. Well, when you are paid peanuts, the work commensurates with it. Hopefully the new place holds more challenges for me (read: useful work).
My fellow team mates are fantastic people (oh I think I've mentioned that before). Anyway in the job, I don't get to meet many other people but still, there's the occasional interaction with people outside the team. It just reinforces what I learnt in my previous job, that it takes all sorts of people to make the world goes round. Although sometimes dealing with stupid people really spoils my day but they exist everywhere. It's part and parcel of life. Anything else that I take away from this job? A good employee is one who pre-empts for his/her boss and clears shit for the boss. haha. There's no perfect boss out there, so thank god when you find one and be thankful for your lot.
Now I'm moving on to my next new job. I'm glad HTB is starting his new job on the same day as me too. =)
