I'm back

Wow I realised that it's been sooo long since I've updated anything on my blog. Thanks to an old friend who came back to read and picked up the entry on the lemongrass jelly haha.

A quick update on my take of my life:
On studies: I've decided to do that course that I've been looking at for years and finally took action and registered. Well the studying part is great, going back to absorb new knowledge is great, and I thought I really loved being on the other side of the classroom again.
-------------------------
On class assignments: Assignments are killers for working adults who are studying at the same time. Assignments has never been my thing whether it's 10 years ago or now. When it comes to assignments, I hate being a student and it doesn't help to have competitive classmates but thank goodness I have some great classmates who helped each other out so now into the last term, we're relying on each other to pull through.

So my conclusion is that school is a love-hate relationship, no matter which side of the classroom you're at.
------------------------
On babies: I have a nephew to call my own. Finally I'm old enough to see the day my younger cousin have a son. Love the chubby and happy kid but not spending enough time to play with him. My student had a daughter. Yes, you heard me right, it's my student who just turned 21 this year but is legally married, owns a flat and has a kid. I feel so old... I only got married at 29 and I don't have my own place and no kids.
------------------------
On turning 30 (part 1): I spent my 30th birthday at the happiest place on earth but by the end of the day I wasn't really that happy. My legs are aching from all the walk, no proper dinner, no present, no birthday cake... bad planning on the husband's part. It makes me miss my family who will get me a cake every year and celebrate my birthday. But my mummy still sms-ed me: happy birthday. :)
------------------------
On turning 30 (part 2): I received the letter from ICA asking me to go change my IC. When I made my first IC 18 years ago (and it was just a piece of laminated paper which later changed to plastic 2-3 years later), I thought that 30 is a really long way off. Now that I've hit it, I wonder where did all the 18 years go. Looking back, there's many things I probably would have done differently but looking at now, the decisions I made along the way made me who I am now. Better or worse? I wouldn't know. But let's just keep being happy and grateful for the things I have now.
-----------------------
On house hunting: At first, my agent was really enthusiastic about showing us flats and it was very interesting to look at what people do (or don't do) to their house but at the end of the day we were tired out by all that viewing. And slowly as we refined our criteria, the perfect house seems to elude us even further and now everything has come to a standstill because nothing fits our criteria came our way. We would have bought one of the units we saw but that guy was asking for too much money. He can jolly well keep his house with the salmon-pink kitchen tiles which I would have gotten rid of pronto if I had the means to buy the house in the first place.
--------------------
On job: It's getting boring and it doesn't help that a new manager took over. I'm glad I had great teammates who pulled me through the job. Just counting down to the day where I can start requesting for internal transfers.

So that's the story of my life for the past
x months that I didn't update my blog. :)

养不教,父之过

Sometimes I have these big theories on how you should handle a certain situation with a kid because I have seen the down side of what happens to a kid a few years down the road when he/she is in a secondary school and one day the teacher calls to see you regarding some issues with the kid and you as the parent laments: 'But I don't know what to do with him(or her)'. I find this a really pathetic excuse.

Issues start early in life and if you don't nip the problem at the bud, as the parent, you are going to be on the losing end. I always believe that children in their intial years are like animals that needs behavioral conditioning. When the kid tries to push the boundary, limits has to be set and consequences conveyed. We do not wait till the problem reaches a state beyond control and start controlling, by then all is too late.

So how do you address the problem of a 8 year-old surfing porn internet? Knowing the parents, I don't think either of them are in the position to counsel the kid and neither will agree to send him for counselling, so the problem will be swept under the carpet and treated as though nothing ever happened. The parents don't realise the serious repercussions of their actions. And as an outsider, I am powerless to influence anyone.

With all these said, I just caught an episode of Super Nanny on Tuesday night, I highly suggest parents watch that program. I believe that all adults who have the intention to be a parent should be educated on how to be a parent as many just don't have the know-hows. Or better still, send them for a one-year teaching stint in a neighbourhood secodary school so they can see for themselves what kind of problems they perpetuate if they are irresponsible parents. As an ex-colleague use to say, you don't just give birth to a kid, it's a life-long responsibility and it's also the parents' responsibility to educate their children. 养不教,父之过, this old chinese saying definitely has its truth.

To teach a man to fish or to give him fish?

When I was in primary school, there was a poster in the AVA room that says: 'Give the man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach the man to fish, you feed him for life. ' or something in this context. Recently I have been pondering this question as I manage the interns that join the department. On the one hand, of course I would love to have someone who is competent and up to the job after I give him/her instructions but on the other hand, I don't have the luxury of time to keep checking on the person's work and keep going back to him/her and ask them to correct their mistakes. A colleague brought up today, instead of having the person getting it right after three or four times, she would rather do it herself and get it right one time.

My teaching years has taught me that not everyone has the intelligence to get it right the first time and not everyone has the initiative to learn things on their own but with me running between my roles, I just don't have the time to sit down and go through the same things over and over again. So where do I bridge the gap between teaching a person to fish or just do the work on my own and save myself the agony?

Value of friends

As one gets older it gets harder to get to know people who sincerely just wants to be friends with you because of who you are. Therefore it saddens one to know that, after being friends for such a long time, there is still a need to test friends on what lengths they will go for you. I guess society probably makes a person so jaded that even years of friendship doesn't withstand it.

Long break from blog

I realised it's been such a long time since I last blogged anything. Well nothing new, except that I am married and now moved in to stay with the MIL. I never thought I would but well, in a blink of an eye everything just sort of grow into normalcy and I have sort of gotten used to staying over at there but somehow it just never felt like home. The best part of the house is still the little bedroom where I get to surf net on the bed.

Anyways we have been such procrastinators that we never got down to do many things that we are suppose to do after the wedding, including sifting through all the wedding photos and posting them online. :P We are suppose to do major house hunting as well but never got around our ass to do it. I tried to blog some weeks back but ended up with just one line and then saved it as a draft and never completed it. Sighs. Too slack. Time to find some drive back before I die rotting on the bed.

This week the hubs and MIL are out of town so I am back to home sweet home, the familiar old! It's so so nice to be back where I can close my eyes and still move around the house knowing where everything are. But then again it's not quite the same because my room has been turned into a storeroom and my brother conveniently moved his cupboard over! I think they really think I am not coming back for good. I miss my life back home. Made me realised how nice it is to have a drink waiting back home for you, hot dinners.... My parents really gave me everything i needed and I hope that in future I can provide the same for my children.

OK, this week I shall aspire to sort my wedding photos and post them online! Keep a look out for them!

Astrology prediction for the week

You may wish you were invisible this week or stowed away on your own island without any stress or distraction to keep you from your own private thoughts. You will have a strong desire to seek solitude and have the space to deal with your own issues, due to the fact that on Wednesday your ruling planet Venus enters privacy-loving Scorpio. You may shy away from interactions with others and seek out your own little corner of the universe for a while. On Friday you may go over your wish list and seriously upgrade it, or at least revise it considerably. The Sun in Sagittarius squares Uranus in your sector of hopes and wishes, and you might not be happy with your current agenda. You have a lot of quiet determination, endless patience, and you usually don't like change, but you don't like to get stuck in a rut, either. You may feel you've gotten too laid back in how you live your life, or that you're simply not experiencing all that life has to offer. The New Moon in Sagittarius on Sunday will help you revitalize your idealistic hopes and dreams.

It takes all sorts of people to make the world go round

The short term scholarship interviews are finally going to be over soon. It takes more than a month of hectic life, countless OT into the night, a lung infection and lots of boo-boos to finally make it through. 3 more interviews and it will be over soon. I'm starting to feel that I can finally breathe again.

It really takes all sorts of people to make the world go round. I see engineering professors who are so trapped in their own world that they became so self-centered vs the sociology professor that gave the interviews a humane touch. I really enjoyed the sociology professor's interview sessions. I see students from the different faculties, engineering students are no so eloquent and even dared to attend interview in slippers vs business students who are so well-dressed for the occasion and spoke so well, maybe having countless presentations really helps. There are many cases where students take on part time work as they are in need of money but there's only so many awards to give away, not enough for everyone vs students who only need the extra cash to invest in shares or piano lessons. End of the day, the question is: how will this $3,000 going to make a difference to the lives of those who receives it.

There are some very unique cases as well.

For example, the national fencing girl who is really really passionate about the sports, to the extent that she chose to pay the full tuition fee which costs $22,000++ a year just so that she can do PE in NIE without being bonded to MOE. Of course, she has the money and don't really need the $3,000 one-year scholarship but I think it's passion that cannot be bought. There's also a interesting guy who wanted the money so that he can start his own business and keep telling the interviewers not to reveal his business plans to others. There's another guy who has been going to Thailand for the past 7 years to teach Chinese to the hill tribe people for a few weeks every year and even picking up very fluent Thai over the years. There's also the guy whose parents didn't wish for him to attend University so that he can take over his father's job to be a mosiac layer but he went against his parents and had to fund his own studies from several jobs. I feel sorry for this last guy as the engineering professors felt that he's unpolished and can survive in all circumstances so thus they felt he didn't deserve the award. I feel that all the more people like him, the underdogs of the society, should be given the money, not only because he genuinely needs it but also as a form of encouragement that he has done the right thing. I am sure that in this case the money would have made more of a difference to him than any other people.

The common thing that binds these people is the passion they have for what they do and to go for it. They really leave me questioning myself.

Random thoughts

I have a gay friend who's always forwarding out interesting articles for me to read. Frankly, I don't read all of them but the recent ones on a local playwright who went to relief teach in a neighbourhood school but got terminated 2 weeks later because of his inclinations. Although as usual The Ministry will not reveal why they asked him to pack his bags. Then there's another one on how a guy was rejected from NIE, again due to his inclinations and he did not pass the 'medical checkup'.

Actually when I read the playwright's blog, I was really touched by how much difference he made to the kids' life in the short 2 weeks he was there. The little things we see when we were teaching overshadowed by the 'bigger' problems of trying to catch up on syllabus on time for exams etc. How in a teacher scarce school, he was made to mark 10 classes of social studies scripts sounds familiar too. Those were the days.

My birthday is just another day

My birthday is just another day. None of my new colleagues knew it was my birthday and I had a long meeting in the morning and I was 'arrowed' by my boss to write minutes. Bleahs. Just another day.

Thanks to everyone who still remembers and messaged me in one way or another, there's a reason why you people are called friends! =)

Series of Random Thoughts 3

Silly me went down all the way to my freaking far new workplace with the intention to checkout my potential colleagues but I actually left without saying hi to my big boss!! Big Mistake!! Argh...
-------------------

This supposedly new ubber cool place that I emailed to for a quotation said the following:

I can only say it’s a $100+++ - $190+++ per pax it really depends on what you need, thus, it’ll be good that we meet up when you’re free. Just for your info, the price includes free flow of wine, beer & soft drink, food, décor, valet, etc.

OMG!!! What kind of price is that?!?!?! Ok. Next.

I'm dropping A LOT of hair!!! Help..... I don't want to turn bald!

Despite attempts to sleep early, I was not able to do that in the end. Any suggestion on how to tame the night owl in me?

Double Happiness

Mood: chirpy....
I received an unexpected call today at 5+ in the evening. Who would have thought that the HR of that organisation works so late! It leaves me feeling very shocked and a bit apprehensive of the working hours but nonetheless it was a pleasant surprise. I got a regular appointment with the organisation! At long last, I can stop my job hunt for the time being. =)

Who would have thought that good things trail one another. I've never felt as great as now. I'm raring to go!

A tribute to the Dean's quotes

Mood: amused....

My dearest Dean of MJU never fails to amaze me with her power of analogy. Today over MSN she totally wow-ed me again. Here's an extract of her exact words:

(earlier we were talking about she going to psycho her friend to join teaching)
dean says:like haunted apartments like that

dean says:
ahaahahaa....one family move in then the other family can move out...we need renewal

wahahaha....really tickled me. But the one I loved best is still the junk food analogy. :D
Hey dean, if you are reading this, do you mind leaving down your junk food analogy again in my comments?? Hehehe.

Wedding shows

Mood: tired....

No no, please do not be mistaken. I'm not getting married anytime soon yet. But just riding on others' invitation to go and attend with them. Actually today's is the second one I've been to. The first one was good experience because we had a cheap buffet for 2 and it's not bad! Well this second one is not so good for buffet as there's too many people!
We never expect so many people! There's at least 1000+ people attending !(@_@)! The queue for the buffet was totally impossible, to the extent that after the whole thing ended we had to go for Macs, so not worth it! And we were totally tired out by all the standing around because there just weren't any chairs in sight.

Sick....

OK, so the last time I updated my blog I did not mention that I was feeling unwell. At first I thought it's nothing major, anyway I cured the flu but then it turned out to be more major than a flu, it became stomach flu! I spent the 2nd day of the new year sitting on a toilet bowl. (@_@) Then the 3rd day of new year bent like an old woman, holding on to my stomach due to gastritis. So I managed to wriggle 2 days' worth of MC to stay at home. It feels really awful to be really sick. But looking on the bright side, I started the year with only needing to work for one day and it's a Friday! Hehehe....being optimistic is good afterall!

The Rainbow Connection

Remember singing this when I was in choir a long long time ago. Nice songs & lyrics & it was sang by Kermit the Frog! I grew up watching good wholesome children tv such as Sesame Street, The Muppets, The Electric Company etc. I wonder what do kids nowadays watch?

Anyway here's the lyrics for The Rainbow Connection:

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered

When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

All of us under its spell,
We know that it's probably magic...

... Have you been half asleep?
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name....
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm s'posed to be...
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Laa, da daa dee da daa daa,La laa la la laa dee daa doo...

Classic example of bad translation

Recently saw an example of really bad translation and it's for a movie showing on big screen by a local production company. 你不要耍我 was translated into: You don't play me.
Phulezeee.... spending so much money to make a movie, the least you can do is provide decent translation.

This reminds me of another classic bad example I saw on a local tv serial and I'll never forget. 你不要陷害我 was translated into: You don't sabo me.

*rolls eyes*

Random thoughts 2

Wanted to keep blogging regularly about the things I see and so on but sometimes just too tired to do it (and anyway I'm just another lazy pack of bones :D) Blogging at such a time is certainly not conducive, basically half my brains are gone, I have a good mind to just go to bed without brushing my teeth or slathering on my moisturiser.....I better try to update more the next time...... Good night blog and whoever that is reading it.

random thoughts 1

Yay! The network is up and running again! T'is the season for burning PC parts. Last week is my power supply, this week is the modem, I wonder what's next.

Anyway that MIA student who's suppose to be taking O levels exams this end of the year decided to turn up again. *Groan* Just great! When I'm enjoying my life I have to take up such stupid things. No pay, waste of time, I don't see any benefit to me. Oh wait, maybe I'm accumulating some good karma from giving all these free tuition? hahaha.
Well I found out that in the meantime she went missing for the past few months, she got MARRIED!!! OMG......and she's only like, 18? And her husband (find it so strange to address her bf as her husband now) is only like 25? A childcare teacher earning $1000 a month, married to a VCD shop assistant! How's that for headlines? Or is that something common in their world that we don't understand? But what kind of quality life is this? Will they be happy in future or regret it big time? Happily married forever or end up in divorce? Somtimes I feel that they are not helping themselves by getting into the same cycle their parents went through. The problem just propagates till somewhere down the chain one of the descendants decide to do the right thing for once but till then, the problem persists.
But anyway she's freaking lazy, not that I want to condemn her. She had school holiday in her childcare for more than a month but yet she didn't do anything useful with it. What is she expecting? She thinks that I'm a miracle worker? That I can produce results by trying to help her cram in 1 year worth of work into 2 months? It's just so not going to happen. She can go sit for the exam but passing poses a difficulty. Maybe if she really start revising all her waking hours but I don't know how much of her time is she going to invest in studying since she claims she has endless housework to do at home.

Frankly, seeing people like her makes me realise that life is difficult out there. No matter what kind of rosy picture the government try to paint, they're just leaving people like her out of the picture. 3 years teaching in a neighbourhood school, really opened my eyes to the below-average household in Singapore. They face one thousand and one problems everyday of their lives! How they get by is a miracle. I count my blessings that I don't have to go through a difficult path.
